The O’Hare site began its relationship with aviation as a place where Douglas C-54s were built during World War II, then known as Orchard Place. Attached to the construction facility was an airfield, where completed planes were flown out. After the war, Douglas departed the airport and so it became known as Orchard Field Airport. It was initially used during the Korean war as a base for the US Air Force, and so commercial flights did not start until around 1955. A first international terminal was built in 1958 and further expansion took place in 1959. An additional 2 terminals opened in 1962. A new terminal replaced the original international terminal in 1993. Since then, further developments have taken place and plans are in place to completely redevelop the site, with work due to be complete in 2028.
