History

The airport was originally commissioned as a Royal Air Force base, RAF Castle Donington, which was decommissioned after the Second World War. A consortium of local government authorities bought the airport in 1964 and was renamed East Midlands Airport. Up until 2005, most flights from the airport were short haul, but in 2005 more long haul destinations were introduced. This coincided with a development programme to extend and remodel the current facilities.
