History

Geneva Cointrin International Airport opened in 1919 as a field airport in the area of Cointrin. In 1937 a concrete runway was constructed. In 1946, the first terminal was built at Geneva, which is now Terminal 2. In 1968 a main terminal was built with the aim to accommodate 7 million passengers each year, a number that was eventually reached in 1985. Geneva Cointrin International Airport passenger numbers are growing rapidly and many more developments are ongoing to handle the increased capacity. The old airport building, located next to the current terminal building, is shown in The Adventures of Tintin story "The Calculus Affair".
