History

The London Docklands Development Corporation originally proposed an airport in the London Docklands area in the early 1980’s, which eventually culminated in the first flight in 1987. The airport was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in the same year. Further expansion occurred during the 1990’s including an extension to the runway to accommodate larger planes. In 2005, the DLR connected the airport to London’s transport network, including a fast journey to Canary Wharf. Further expansion work was carried out for the 2012 London Olympic Games and further developments are expected to be completed between now and 2030.
