History

The airfield was opened in 1943 and was used during World War II as a base for the RAF. After the war, the airfield continued to be used by the RAF. Eventually, in 1949, the airport was taken over and used for civilian use, with several UK charter airlines using it as a base. In the 60’s the airport was used by charter airlines as a cheaper alternative to Heathrow and Gatwick. The current terminal building was built between 1988 and 1991 and cost £100 million. This coincided with long haul flights leaving from the airport.
