History

The current location of the airport was first opened in 1938 as a grass field and it wasn’t until 1960 that the airport had its first paved runway. Originally owned by private companies, the airport was eventually acquired by Lugano’s transport company in 1974. In the early 1980’s, the airport was invested in to provide more flights to various European cities. The runway was extended and a new control tower was built in 1989.
