History

The airport opened in 1935 as Woolsington Aerodrome by the Secretary of State for Air. A new runway, apron and air traffic control tower was built in 1967 and opened by then Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. Further improvements and expansion occurred during the 1970s and 80s, and in 1991 a metro station was opened, connecting the city centre of Newcastle via the Tyne and Wear metro system.A new departure terminal was opened in 2004 and further developments are still taking place.
