History

The airport was opened as Finningley Airfield in 1915. During the First World War, it was used by the Royal Flying Corps and in the Second World War it was primarily used for training. The advent of the Cold War saw the airports military importance rise once again as it was the home of nuclear-armed Vulcan bombers. Training then took place at the airport during the 1970’s and 80’s and the airport was eventually decommissioned in 1995. New demand for an airport in the region ensured that the airport reopened as a commercial airport in 2005.
