History

The first flights took place at the airport in 1910, but it was not until the First World War in 1917 that the building of hangers commenced. After the First World War, the site became a transit camp for refugees. In 1932 the airport became Southampton Municipal Airport and during World War II it came under Naval command and acted predominantly as a training centre. After the war the airport returned to civil ownership and was developed. A train station was built next to the airport in 1963 and the new M27 motorway was built close to the airport. In 2014 the airport was sold to a private investment firm for £1 billion.
