History

The original airport field was opened in 1931, with flights connecting Zagreb and Belgrade. In the 1960’s the airport was moved from Sinj to Resnik and opened in 1966. A newly expanded terminal building was built in 1979 to coincide with the Mediterannean games held in Split in that year. During the war in Yugoslavia, passenger numbers virtually dropped to zero and most of the traffic was UN or NATO cargo planes. After 1995, passenger numbers started to rise again and by 2005, the terminal had a facelift. The airport is busiest during the summer months, accommodating visitors from northern Europe.
