History

Bournemouth Airport opened in 1941 as RAF Hurn, but was transferred to civilian ownership in 1944. For a short period, it was the only airport in Britain to serve international flights until the creation of Heathrow. Commercial services resumed at the airport in 1958 and several other short European destinations were regular flights from the airport. In 1969, the airport was purchased by local government and was renamed Bournemouth Hurn Airport. This coincided with a redevelopment of the airport to fully transform it into a commercial airport. Various expansions have taken place since then, including a new arrivals hall in 2011 and an increase in public transport to and from the airport.
