History

The airport was established in 1939 and during the Second World War, it became one of the main RAF bases during the Battle of Britain. The airport retained aircraft maintenance for military aircraft until 1957. The RAF eventually ceased operations at the airport in 1959. Aircraft manufacture and testing then occurred at the site for many years, including wings for a number of Airbus projects. Today, the site employs over 6500 people.The airport is used to transport workers and parts to other destinations but there are also a number of air schools and private jet charters.
