History

Originally known as Speke Airport, the airport started scheduled flights in 1930, but was officially opened in 1933. By the late 1930’s a terminal and air traffic control tower was built to accommodate increasing numbers of flights across the Irish Sea. During World War II the airport was commandeered by the RAF and became known as RAF Speke. It was a key manufacturer of planes during the war. Normal civil aviation resumed after the war and the city eventually took control of the airport in 1961. Several construction and redevelopment projects have taken place over the years due to demand for low-cost flights to Europe, but a plan is in place to grow the airport and introduce more long-haul flights by 2030.
