History

Ciampino Airport opened in 1916, making it one of the oldest airports still in operation. This airport was the base for the first aircraft to reach the North Pole in 1926. The airport was captured by Allied forces in World War II and afterwards was commandeered as a US Air Force Military base. It was Rome’s main airport until 1960, with the opening of Fiumicino superseding it. Previously just handling charter and executive flights, the airport now hosts a number of low cost carriers.
