History

The airport was opened in 1925 as one of the first civilian airports in the world. The airport was closed for civilian operations during World War II and the runway was extended during this time. In 1945, the airport had remained unscathed from the effects of war and in 1948, Copenhagen Airport was the 3rd largest airport in Europe. This growth coincided with a terminal expansion and new hangars were erected. A new terminal was built in 1960 and further expansion was completed in 1972. Instead of moving the airport to a new site, it was decided to expand the existing airport, of which many projects were completed in the early 2000’s.
