History

Originally called Turnhouse Aerodrome and opened in 1916, Edinburgh Airport acted as a defence base during World War I. The airport once again acted as a base during World War II. The airport remained under military control until the late 1940’s, when commercial services started to use the airport. A passenger terminal was built in 1956, and since this time there have been various renovations and expansions, including a new air traffic control tower. Work is currently underway to expand the terminal further.
