History

Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was constructed to replace the previous Athens airport (Ellinikon) which had reached saturation point and had nowhere left to expand. After various delays, the government tendered the project and eventually the Athens International Airport S.A. was formed to oversee the development. Construction began in 1996 and the airport was officially opened in March 2001. The airport has seen a significant rise in passenger numbers over the years and was particularly prominent during the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.
