History
The airport was built during World War II and opened in 1939, when Gibraltar was a naval base for the British. It was originally only an emergency airfield but has since been expanded using rock from the Rock of Gibraltar and an extended runway can handle larger aircraft.
Until 2006, the only flights permitted to the airport were from the UK due to ongoing disputes over Gibraltar between the Spanish and UK governments. It has had on and off success with flights from mainland Spain into Gibraltar, mainly due to a lack of passengers.
