History

The airport opened for civilian aviation in 1964 but was a military site until 1968. In 1972, the first terminal for passengers was built there. A new terminal was built in 1988 and opened in 1993. In 1995 the airport's name was changed from Kraków–Balice Airport to John Paul II International Airport Kraków–Balice, to honor Pope John Paul II, who spent many years of his life in Kraków and had served as Archbishop of Kraków from 1963 until he became Pope in 1978.The airport has been modernised several times since the year 2000 to bring it up to modern standards.
