History

Originally opened in 1938, Luton Airport spent its early years as a Royal Air Force base during World War II. Until the 1980’s the airport became a viable and successful commercial airport, but in the late 80’s it came under threat from nearby Stansted Airport. In 1990, the airport was renamed to London Luton Airport to highlight its close proximity to the capital. This eventually saw the council sell a concession contract to a private investment firm in 1997, who built a new terminal opened in 1999. Further developments in the 2000’s included a new departure hall, but plans for an additional runway have been shelved.
