    History

    The airport was opened in the 1930’s and was originally called Sandweiler Airport. The German Army commandeered the airport during World War II, until it was taken over by the US Air Force in 1944 and used to evacuate casualties back to the UK. It was returned to the control of Luxembourg in 1945. Since this time it has grown to become a popular civilian airport and has become a centre for transporting high value goods such as fine art and jewels in a high security zone away from the main airport.
