Building of the airport commenced in 1931 and was not officially opened until 1936. During World War II, the airport was transferred to the Soviet Air Force and then later by German forces. After the war, the building of a new terminal resumed and opened in 1955. The terminal quickly became obsolete due to the amount of passenger traffic and a new terminal was built and completed in 1980. Further expansion has since taken place, including new maintenance hangars and extensions to the runway to increase the capacity of the airport.
