History

The airport opened in 1934 to replace a previous aerodrome that could no longer be expanded. The airport expanded very quickly in its early years, with a large modern terminal building and its size was also an excellent base for the Polish military. During World War II, the airport was seized by the German Army and was also completely destroyed in the initial stages of the war. The Germans used the field as a training centre and an aircraft repair works. The buildings were intentionally destroyed at the end of the war by the retreating German Army. After the war, civilian flights resumed and a new terminal and runway were built. Another new terminal was added in 1969. Various further developments have since occured. The airport was renamed in 2001 after Polish composer Frédéric Chopin.
