A New Austrian Mountain Retreat Built to Reset Mind and Body

A New Austrian Mountain Retreat Built to Reset Mind and Body image

In the Tyrolean village of Oberau, perched high in Austria’s Wildschönau valley, lies a wellness destination designed not just for relaxation - but for total recalibration. Part medical clinic, part performance retreat, Mount Med is where athletes, entrepreneurs and burnt-out executives come to restore energy and focus on their health and wellbeing.

Recently reopened following a rumoured £62 million transformation, the resort’s fresh timber exterior and clean architectural lines give little away. But step inside and you’ll find a tightly curated world where cutting-edge diagnostics, longevity science and deep physical restoration unfold in synchronicity.

At the core of Mount Med’s philosophy is the Mylife Changer® method - developed by Austrian surgeon Dr Alexander Papp after a decade of clinical research. Initially designed to support patients before and after surgery, the protocol now forms the basis of a holistic programme that includes anti-inflammatory nutrition, precision medical screenings, and therapies designed to trigger autophagy: the body’s natural cellular clean-up function.

But what really distinguishes Mount Med is how this clinical rigour is paired with luxurious and rather indulgent hospitality. After arriving late at night, I found a plate of beautifully prepared food waiting in my suite, along with a stitched hand towel in the bathroom monogrammed with my initials.

Whilst I was enjoying dinner, I was told my room would enter “evening mode” while I ate, and indeed, I returned to dimmed lighting, cooled air, warm robes and pillows fluffed. The goal is to eliminate all unnecessary friction, including the smallest of chores, so guests can focus entirely on themselves.

Days here are structured but never rushed. One of my mornings began with cryotherapy in a chamber chilled to -110°C, an invigorating shock that increases circulation and drops cortisol levels. However, there are a plethora of options available such as IV infusions, oxygen therapy, and device-led biohacking. One such treatment sees you lying on a comfortable bed staring up at a kaleidoscope of lights wearing headphones for guided meditation. “Twenty minutes here is the same as a week’s holiday,” a therapist says. As unlikely as that sounds, I left feeling clearer than I had in months.

One of the standout sessions, however, was a personal training session with Wolfgang Peer, a former coach to Winter Olympic gold medalists. His focus? Feet. “Everyone’s working on their abs, glutes and posture. But they forget about their foundations,” he said, guiding me through a series of slow, barefoot exercises designed to reawaken dormant muscles. Part reflexology, part micro-movement therapy, it was unusual but I must admit very effective.

Nutrition and dining at the resort is firmly rooted in performance - 60% protein, 20% fat, and just 20% carbohydrates, mostly from green vegetables - but thanks to Executive Chef Phillip Schnabel, the experience never feels austere. Broths are deeply savoury, plates artful, and fermented vegetables add an umami brightness to nearly every dish. Calorie intake is kept between 850 and 1,300 per day, but with an emphasis on fats and proteins, over the course of my entire stay I didn’t feel hungry at any point.

The spa facilities are expansive and beautifully integrated into the natural landscape. A glass-walled indoor pool connects to an outdoor whirlpool terrace with views across the valley. There’s a Kneipp course for hydrotherapy, saunas, mineral steam rooms with starry-sky ceilings, and a secluded “nude zone” of salt saunas and forest-clearing steam baths. For total privacy, the resort also offers a private spa suite and bookable health treatment rooms away from the main facilities.

For longer stays or those travelling with a partner, the Chalet Suite offers a serene upgrade in both space and privacy. Spanning two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the interiors follow the resort’s minimalist ethos, with soft neutral tones, natural timber and stone, and subtle design touches that prioritise calm and clarity over ornamentation.

A private balcony opens out over the Wildschönau valley, offering the perfect spot to take in the mountain air, which is best enjoyed with a cup of herbal tea. Thoughtful zoning separates sleeping, living and bathing areas, which makes it feel a real home-away-from-home.

Mount Med is not a place to enjoy a standard spa retreat. It’s where you come to focus, to recalibrate, and to emerge with a sense of clarity that few other retreats offer. Whether you’re an overworked founder, a recovering athlete, or just need a full-system reset, this is wellness built not on trend — but on science, results, and human detail.
