The airport opened as an aerodrome in 1939. It became a key aerodrome during the Second World War, being home to the German Luftwaffe from 1941 and used for North African bombing campaigns. The airport was recaptured by the Allies in 1943 and quickly repaired due to the damage sustained from bombing. It was renamed Comiso Airfield. The airport fell into disuse until 1954, when it opened for civil aviation. It became a European base for the Cold War missiles in 1981 and was refurbished by the US Air Force. From 1983 to 1991 it was the largest NATO base in southern Europe. After the nuclear treaty was signed in 1987, the base closed in 1991. Refurbishment work started in 2004, with a new runway and new control tower, to turn the airport back into a civilian airport. The first flight took place in 2007 but the airport opened properly in 2013.
